What is Challah Bread? Challah, pronounced haa-laa, is traditional Jewish egg
yeast bread. Our Challah is made with eggs, flour, yeast, honey, tofu (for
natural preservation & moisture), water and hint of vanilla, and may be
sprinkled with sesame or poppy seeds upon request. It is sometimes called egg
bread, and has a distinct yellowish interior with a slightly sweet flavor.
In our bakery it has drawn comparisons with Hawaiian bread, but unlike Hawaiian
bread our challah is sweetened with all natural honey not sugar and is a more
subtle flavor
While Challah usually is braided in threes, our loaves are braided in sixes,
threes or in a wreath/ring shape. The bread may be served warm or cool depending
upon individual preference.
The bread is an excellent choice for slicing, because of it lovely texture
especially in braided form, and is a favorite sandwich bread, particularly in
delis in major cities.
Our customers love it many ways. It makes excellent cold cut sandwiches, salad
sandwiches (chicken, egg or tuna salad) or a breakfast sandwich (eggs &
meat/cheese of choice). It makes a great bread served at dinner with just about
any meal, just tear & eat or slice & butter. Or in party/entertaining catering,
we serve it with our handmade spinach spread or our cinnamon honey butter, WOW
those are great. Also, great served with any soup.
It is also praised as one of the best breads to use for French toast which is
served in our restaurant daily. It absorbs the egg/milk liquid perfectly, and it
can be cut thick. Eggs, milk & a splash of vanilla will set the flavor off.
Prepare yourself for some of the best french toast on the planet.
Historically, Challah is a part of many Sabbath celebrations, and also is
consumed during many Jewish holidays. Challah is never eaten on Passover
however, because the day calls for eating only unleavened bread. Therefore, no
bread containing yeast can be served. On Rosh Hashanah, challah may be made in
the shape of a ladder.
